Installing Docker

Docker is a popular containerisation tool. This guide covers how to install on Ubuntu and Debian, but the process should be similar for other distributions too.

 

1) SSH into your Linux machine, or open the terminal if you're using a GUI

2) Run the following command, based on your distribution:

 

Debian

 

# Add Docker's official GPG key:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ca-certificates curl
sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/debian/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc

# Add the repository to Apt sources:
echo \
  "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc] https://download.docker.com/linux/debian \
  $(. /etc/os-release && echo "$VERSION_CODENAME") stable" | \
  sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update

 

Ubuntu

 

# Add Docker's official GPG key:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ca-certificates curl
sudo install -m 0755 -d /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg -o /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc
sudo chmod a+r /etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc

# Add the repository to Apt sources:
echo \
  "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/etc/apt/keyrings/docker.asc] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu \
  $(. /etc/os-release && echo "$VERSION_CODENAME") stable" | \
  sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
sudo apt-get update

 

3) Then, install Docker by running the following command:

sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin

 

Note

If you are not using your root user to deploy containers, you will need to add your user to the Docker group.

E.g.: For user 'zarro', run the following command:

sudo usermod -aG docker zarro

 

This adds the zarro user to the Docker group on your Linux system. Then, log out and log back in to your SSH session and you should now be able to run Docker containers. You can test this by running the hello-world Docker container:

 

sudo docker run hello-world
